Hey my Majessties,
So, in the South, there is one thing that rules the school. The SEC, or the South-Eastern Conference for college football. The game day experiences are one of a kind and the rivalries beat every other. Sorry Cheltenham vs. Abington, but USC vs. Clemson is so much better. One year, we took a time out in our own game to see Clemson lose against Georgia.
But in terms of going to a football game in the South, there are a few rules that need to be followed.
First, the game is an event so dress accordingly. Pictures will be taken and fun will be had. The girls here wear the customary black or garnet dress and cowboy boots or sandals. You will have to search pretty hard to find just a t-shirt and shorts in the student sections. Guys get away with more casual looks but most of them will be seen wearing nice shirts and khaki shorts. And do not be surprised by all of the face tattoos girls are sporting. And they may be on there for a couple days after the game too.
Second, tailgating is a sport. There are so many places to go to tailgate and so many people who come more than five hours early to celebrate being there and supporting the team. Heck, some people even tailgate through the game if they did not manage to get a ticket. Whatever food you can think of, someone probably brought it. And you can only sit back and enjoy yourself when you are surrounded by 80,000 and more people who love the gamecocks as much as you do.
Third, football is a religion. It is taken very seriously but that makes the game all the more fun. Watching from five rows above the touchdown zone brings a certain energy to the 2,000 students in that one section who are constantly yelling and cheering the team on. We boo the other team when they pass, we sing Eminem when it plays, and we love our school. What more could you ask for?
In the last game against University of Georgia, the atmosphere was insane. It was torrentially raining, everyone was soaked, and no one could be happier. And best of all, we ended up winning 38-35!!!
That is why we are cocky for a reason.
It is one of the best parts of being in South Carolina for school and I would not change it for anything.
Go Cocks and Enjoy!
Jess
